된장녀~ Korean Girls and Luxury products

Louis Vuitton sales in South Korea went up by almost 32% in the first half of 2011.

That means that LV Korean sales were valued at about $227.5 million American dollars (242.4 billion Korean won) so far for 2011.

That is A LOT OF LOGO.

Korean women love their logos.

The expression; '된장녀' in Korean (literally translating to 'bean-paste-stew-girl') refers to the kind of Korean girl who has a very basic standard of living, but channels her negative amount of savings into purchasing luxury products such as Chanel, Prada, or LV handbags, wallets, and sunglasses.  This '된장녀' does not have the means or the income to support such lust for purchasing luxury items, but she cuts back on expenditure severely in other areas of her life to support her habit.

For example, she may only eat the very simplest of Korean dishes such as 된장찌개 (bean-paste stew...it smells *awesome*) which are very very cheap.  She may also live in a very small one-room apartment, or live in a student dormitory.

Starbucks (strangely enough) is also considered a 'luxury product' in South Korea.

It is interesting that in a worsening economic climate, Korean women are heading straight to the department stores to stock up on more luxury goods.
